The collection is divided into three series; Correspondence and Subject files; HBS Writing; and HBS Executive Education.
Biographical Note:
D. Daryl Wyckoff was born on April 28, 1936 in Santa Monica, California. He received the a BB in Aeronautical Engineering from MIT in 1958, an MBA in Marketing and Logistics from the University of Southern California in 1968, and a DBA in Transportation and Logistics from Harvard Business School in 1972.
From 1958 to 1968, Wyckoff worked for Cosmodyne Corporation, an aerospace conglomerate in Southern California. He held a number of positions, including manager of the leasing division, general manager of the company’s I.C.C. motor carrier subsidiaries, and vice president in charge of the logistics group. From 1968 to 1969 he directed a consulting firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts specializing in transportation and logistics. He was a lecturer at Northeastern University from 1969 to 1972.
He pursued his doctoral studies at Harvard Business School from 1970 to 1972, focusing on airfreight and motor carrier transportation. After receiving his DBA, he immediately joined Harvard Business School faculty. He started as lecturer in 1972, and he became an associate professor in 1975 and a full professor in 1979. In 1980, he was named James J. Hill Professor of Transportation. He was faculty chair of the Program for Management Development in the early 1980s.
Wyckoff wrote several articles and books on the operation of service industries and transportation, including Railroad Management (1976) and Truck Drivers in America (1979). His article, “New Tools for Achieving Service Quality” won the 1985 Article-of-the-Year Award from The Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly. He was a consultant to several transportation companies in the United States and the United Kingdom, and he also advised the United States Department of Transportation, I.C.C ., Association of American Railroads, American Trucking Associations, and the Government or Iran in the 1970s. He served on the board of directors of the Charles River Associates, Lex Transportation, Ltd., Midway Airlines, Victoria Station, Inc., and Rusty Pelican Restaurants.
