3 linear feet (4 volumes, 2 boxes, 1 carton)Materials in this collection were gathered by Charles E. Ames in writing his book, "Pioneering the Union Pacific" (Appleton-Century-Crofts, 1969). The collection includes his reading notes, family scrapbooks, two account books, 1868-1872, of Oakes Ames, and copies of pamphlets and documents relating to the railroad. Also included are microfilm copies of records held by other repositories: part of the autobiography of Grenville Dodge; Department of Interior letters to and from Oakes and Oliver Ames, 1865-1870; and reports by Dodge, 1868-1869, and the government directors of the Union Pacific Railroad, 1864-1872.
